Thinking Positively: Think, Feel, Act

By Fran Sherman, LCSW

Spring is in the air. It makes us feel alive with the beginning of Daylight Savings Time and more sunshine in most parts of the country.

We begin to feel energized, our endorphins kick in, we feel happier and we want to be a little more adventurous.  The flowers begin to bloom and so do we.

It’s the time for parties — weddings, proms, school dances, retirements, and the list goes on.  Most of us want to take a date to these events, but how do we go about asking someone on that date, finding the “right” date and thinking about renewing springtime with a new and happy relationship?

I always tell people to Think, Feel, Act.  It’s not hocus-pocus. It’s really about thinking positively.

On a daily basis, put positive thoughts in your mind. Think about meeting someone who is wonderful because you are wonderful. The more positive thoughts that we think, the better we feel. If we feel good, then our actions play out the same way. We’ll have smiles on our faces, and find that people are more attracted to us because we feel good.

Our positive energy is shared by everyone around us. Confidence and positive energy are the best aphrodisiacs.

Experiment with this by doing affirmations. State five to 10 positive things about yourself on a daily basis, and as you’re doing it, take time to notice how you feel, take time to look at your body language and see if you’re smiling. I make sure to include affirmations in my daily life, and it really works.

And as for finding that “right” date, start by keeping an open mind.  Be friendly and smile at people wherever you go. You will be amazed at how many people you can meet and start a conversation with just by smiling. Take a walk in the park. When it’s nice outside, people are friendly and energized and don’t feel pressured to “meet” anyone, so there are few expectations and they feel more relaxed.

As I’ve said before, take a chance by going online. You’d be surprised at not only the negative but the positive experiences you can have.  Get introduced by friends, join adventure/singles groups, a cooking class or any other activity where folks participate, and you can find like-minded people.

If you’re working on a prom date, try not to be nervous. The worst that anyone can do is say no.  But allow that to crush you. Let it energize you and open your eyes to the fact there’s someone out there who will be lots more fun to take to the prom.

For adults as well as teenagers, just remember to stay positive and never let someone else to make you feel unworthy.  Remember how special you are, and Think, Feel, Act.

  2. I wrote down your blog in my bookmark. I hope that it somehow did not fall and continues to be a great place for reading texts. Lavinia Adrien Fawcette
